Carstens Fire in Mariposa County causes evacuations

FRESNO, Calif.

Smoke from the fire was visible 20 miles away in Catheys Valley.

The fire started near Carstens Road, east of Highway 140 around 2 p.m. on Sunday. Officials said the fire is at least 100 acres with no containment at this point. Evacuation orders are in place for about 500 homes in Hites Cove, Jerseydale and Scott Road.

Crews from the Fresno City Fire Department and Fresno County Cal Fire are helping battle the flames, as well as firefighters from Merced. The Red Cross is setting up an evacuation center and shelter at Mariposa Elementary School located at 5044 Jones Street. Mariposa, CA.
