North Fork Rancheria casino clears another hurdle

A proposal to build an Indian gaming casino on Highway 99 in Madera County cleared another hurdle.

The state senate approved a compact to allow the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians to build a $200 million casino near Avenue 18.

The tribe has argued its reservation 40 miles away near North Fork is not suitable for such a project. Critics say the plan sets a bad precedent for off-reservation gaming.

The tribe has partnered with station casinos on the project. However it still needs to win the support of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
