A man accused of kidnapping a 10-year-old girl, then assaulting her before dumping her in Western Fresno County has changed his plea to no contest.

This means Kalvin Cardenas will not stand trial as scheduled next week.

Police say the 24-year-old grabbed the girl as she rode her bike to school in Central Fresno. Cardenas was arrested and charged with kidnapping and sexual assault in September 2012 after a standoff in Clovis.

His attorney told Action News that Cardenas realized he could not deny what he had done because he recorded much of it to video. He faces a maximum sentence of life without parole. Cardenas is scheduled to be sentenced in May.
