FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A ceremony was held on Friday in Downtown Fresno in memory of a local community leader. Fresno native Alfonso Hernandez Jr. died of a heart attack in January.

The youth center at Dickey Playground was dedicated in his honor. It will now be called the Alfonso Hernandez Jr. Youth and Community Center.

Hernandez helped launch what used to be called the Chicano Youth Center on Divisadero Street back in 1975. The center provides services, including mentoring and counseling.

Organizers say they wanted to recognize the tireless efforts by Hernandez, who devoted his life to addressing the needs of low-income children and their families.
