Man fires at fire chief, police, then kills self on I-5 in Kern County
Authorities in Kings County said a suspect involved in a standoff along Interstate 5 in Kern County has died.

FRESNO, Calif. -- Authorities in Kern County said a suspect involved in a standoff along Interstate 5 in Kern County has died.

The situation started around midnight on Interstate 5 near Highway 46. The California Highway Patrol says a Shasta County fire chief happen to be driving in the area when he spotted a disabled car. When the fire chief stopped to help, the driver of the car started shooting, and ran into a nearby field.

"When they got nearby the suspect, he fired two volumes of shots, multiple rounds each time at the deputies. At that point deputies maintained a perimeter," said Steve Williams, Kern County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators say the suspect ended up killing himself while authorities were searching for him. His name has not been released. Officials say the car was stolen from Lemoore.
