MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) -- Renderings show what the Merced Mall plans to look like after a major remodel. Codding Enterprises, owner of the Merced Mall, recently announced its plan to expand the city's major retail hub by adding another 90,000 square feet of new retail and entertainment.

Mall employees said it's been a long time coming.

"Its been here since 1969 and its served its purpose," said Nanette Villegas, Merced Mall Marketing Director.

Villegas said they are aiming to have more outdoor shopping. They also plan on bringing in more trendy dining options, along with a two story movie theatre.

People who work at the mall said they are excited to finally see it grow.

"There is not a lot here for entertainment. If you see, all the brands-- that's it. The mall looks old. People need something new," said Rejuanul Rony, Cell Gallery employee .

Villegas said they want to create a spot that offers more than just shopping.

"We have the UC and that population is growing also. They're not just shoppers but they're more into an experience like dining and a place to hang out."

Merced City Manager Steve Carrigan said this will create jobs both during the construction process and once it is finished. He also said this gives people the chance to shop and eat locally, keeping money in Merced's economy.

Carrigan said the UC Merced expansion is the catalyst for all the upcoming renovations in the city, including the mall.

"There's 3,500 kids moving to town in the next four years. We gotta house them, we got feed them, we have to keep them busy. Everything in Merced is driven by the 2020 project."

Villegas said they are getting ready for the change, and said they are looking forward to bringing new life into the mall and into Merced.

"We are back on our feet and we are tapping into the potential that this town has always had."

The City Manager said this project is still in the early phases, and there is not a price tag on the remodel yet.

Villegas said they hope to have the renovation finished by 2020.
