CHP: Driver who hit 2 girls in Porterville was going too fast
Two girls were taken to the hospital with major injuries after being hit by a car in Porterville.

PORTERVILLE, Calif. (KFSN) -- Two girls were taken to the hospital with major injuries after being hit by a car. The accident happened around 7:30 p.m. Friday on Date Avenue near Park Street in Porterville.

The 11- and 14-year-old victims were in a crosswalk when they were struck by a Dodge Dart, according to the California Highway Patrol. The speed limit is just 35 mph, but investigators say the driver was not able to stop because he was going too fast. The man stayed at the scene. He's been identified as 23-year-old Celestino Torres.

The girls were both rushed to area hospitals. "One was taken to Kaweah Delta Hospital in Visalia, and one was taken to CRMC in Fresno for major injuries," said CHP Officer Tyrone Bowser.

The girls' names have not been released, but they are both from Porterville. The driver was not arrested, and there's no word yet on whether he could face charges for speeding.
