FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A man is spending Christmas in jail after police said he drank and then crashed his car into the side of a Fresno police patrol car.

It happened Thursday night near Kearney and Thorne. Police said the suspect drove too close to an officer's car and then hit it. The officer gave chase when the suspect got out of the car and ran.

The suspect was found hiding in a yard and taken into custody.

No one was hurt and police said the driver was under the influence. "Thankfully it could've been much worse, someone driving as intoxicated as this individual was-- or intoxicated at all-- could be a tragedy for anyone of us. An officer, a member of our community, anyone," said Lt. Mindy Casto, Fresno Police Department.

The passengers who were inside the car stayed behind and were detained by Fresno police.
