Staying ahead of real estate fraud
Tulare County Prosecutor Trevor Holly says he's found his niche, prosecuting real estate fraud.

TULARE COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- Tulare County Prosecutor Trevor Holly says he's found his niche, prosecuting real estate fraud.

Trevor Holly said, "It's deliberate, its planned people intend to get away with it, it's not a random crime."

Holly says despite economic improvements the housing market in the county still struggles, he says that leaves people desperate, willing to trust anyone offering help. Only problem, looking for help often opens the doors to scammers.

"You should never pay for foreclosure rescue services, you should definitely never pay up front," said Holly.

District Attorney Tim Ward says county foreclosure rates remain higher than the state average.

Ward explained, "We're on the forefront of making sure those homeowners that are distressed are protected."

That's why they're releasing public service announcements both on radio and television to warn people. Holly says crooks are targeting Spanish speaking families, and the elderly.

The district attorney's office has also received a grant from the state to pay for an investigator to prevent either from becoming victims.

Holly is currently prosecuting 13 cases. In some, he may be able to get money back, but the house is already gone. Which is why he hopes this new push prevents more people from losing their homes.

The most important thing to remember is never pay money upfront for loan modifications or pay for foreclosure rescue help.
