Sang Pediatrics reopens with prayers for Zyang Vang

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A pediatrician's office in Downtown Fresno is now open for business once again -- a week after the shooting death of one of their employees. Zyang Vang, a 33-year-old mother of seven, was murdered by her ex-husband at the office last Tuesday.

A Buddhist ceremony of healing marked the start of a new day at Sang Pediatrics. Tears shed, for a mother who was ripped away from her seven children, all too soon.

"It's unfortunate when it gets to this place where people are in a place where we actually have to mourn them because they did not survive. In the hands of the person that was supposed to take care of them," said domestic violence survivor Lisa Casarez.

That victim was Vang -- who was killed last Tuesday by her estranged ex-husband. The office where she was killed is back open and owner Dr. New Sang says it's with a new understanding of domestic violence victims.

"Asking for help is sometimes viewed as a sign of weakness. I believe that this may show people that it's never too late to ask for help," said Dr. Sang.

Grief counselors from the Marjaree Mason Center are helping Vang's loved ones recover from their loss. The domestic violence assistance group said they've had an influx of people reach out to them for help since the shooting.

"We've talked to numerous people some that were here some that were in the surrounding areas or heard about it or have a friend or a family member that were affected by it. This has touched a lot of lives," said Rae Pardini of the Marjaree Mason Center.

The ritual ended with the burning of Zyang's name -- a sense of hope rising from the ashes.

Doctor New Sang and his staff have created a go-fund-me account for Vang's children. Sang is also re-painting the inside of the clinic's office -- creating a mural to honor Vang's memory.
