Bob Nelson is the district's first internal employee to be named superintendent in nearly 30 years

Fresno, Calif. (KFSN) -- It's official -- Bob Nelson is the new superintendent of Fresno Unified. The longtime educator who served on an interim basis has been chosen to lead one of the largest school districts in the state.

"It's an incredible opportunity--fourth largest district in California is not a small lift," said Nelson.

Nelson emerged as the finalist last month following a nationwide search. He now takes over for Michael Hanson who was fired without cause back in January. It is the first time in nearly three decades that Fresno Unified has selected its superintendent from within the district.

"A lot of needs right now--this district is in the media for a lot of different ways right now. There's a lot of things happening and to come in at a time when leadership is needed and provide leadership is a really wonderful opportunity," said Nelson.

There definitely won't be any sort of honeymoon period for Nelson. The father of seven enters at a somewhat turbulent time for Fresno Unified. Many are calling for school board President Brooke Ashjian's resignation following recent controversial comments about the LGBT community.

Meanwhile, the teachers union is considering going on strike -- following months of failed negotiations with the district.

"We remain fully and completely committed to working out a settlement that is mutually agreeable to all parties and respects the rights and privileges of our employees...to make sure the students have what they need and keeps the district on solid financial support as well," said Nelson.
