Students at Hoover High School in Northeast Fresno gathered in the event center and nearly 30 classrooms on campus to hear the president speak. In his address, the president asked students to excel and work hard to become future leaders.

Fresno Unified school officials say they received calls from some parents saying they did not want their children to watch the speech. Some of Obama's critics feared he would use the address to push political beliefs.

Many students say they were motivated by the president's words, and his personal story of triumph.
