Police arrest armed robbers who targeted Tower District

FRESNO, Calif.

Police say three people may have been responsible for at least 8 hold ups in the Tower District.

The holdups and strong armed robberies have generated some concern even fear in this popular area. Police nabbed three suspects following a robbery early Sunday morning.

Police closed in on this area this morning after they were flagged down by a robbery victim. They launched a door to door search for the suspects.

"I was sound asleep, it was a little after two in the morning and I heard, boom boom boom at the door," Diane Waite said.

Waite says the police officer at the door explained why officers and the police helicopter had zeroed in on her apartment complex.

"There were two suspects and they apprehended one of them and the second one they were pretty sure was in the back yard," Waite said.

Police captured all three suspects, and found a handgun.

The three are believed responsible for a crime spree that bartender Marie Simpson says has had everybody watching out for each other.

"Very much so, getting rides home walking in groups and avoiding, keeping an eye out for everything," Marie Simpson said.

A Facebook Page and text message alerts were part of this modern Neighborhood Watch system. There's relief the suspects have been caught and hope the District's reputation as a fun and friendly place has not been hurt.

"That's wonderful it makes me feel more safe to walk home tonight after work," Simpson said.

"It's hard because it's a great place to be and there's a lot of people walking around you don't see that in other neighborhoods so that's a plus, but then, but I think the crime is on the rise everywhere so I'm not quick to say it's just the tower but yeah, it is a little bit scary," Waite said.

The suspects are identified as a man, and two teens. They were targeting people walking alone at night, confronting them in alleys and doorways.

While police believe they have those responsible in custody, they remind everyone out at night anywhere in town to take precautions.
