Fresno, Clovis student Tdap vaccine deadline approaches

FRESNO, Calif.

Students in the Fresno Unified School District will have up until Thursday morning to get the shot. Both districts say students without proof of the shot will be sent home.

A new state law requires all 7th through 12th graders to get the shot or their parents can sign a waiver to forego the vaccine.

Kelly Avants with the Clovis Unified School District says the school has promoted the deadline. She says, "The past 6 months we have been making a variety of efforts to get in touch with families, everything from phone calls and letters to personal visits." Avants adds students who do get sent home may struggle to catch up with school work. Schools will also lose money when children are absent. The state factors in student attendance into their school funding. Every time a student is absent, schools in Clovis lose about 40 dollars per day.
