It happened just before 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at a home on Crystal and Dayton in Central Fresno.
Investigators say the vehicle was trailing a garbage truck during the neighborhood's annual trash pick-up day.
The driver of the truck left it running when he got out to help haul trash. That's when someone hopped in, and took off. The truck crashed just a few houses down.
The 89-year-old woman who lives at the home had no idea what had happened, until a neighbor knocked on her door.
Police tell Action News the person who stole the truck got away by hopping peoples' fences.
They set up a perimeter around the neighborhood to look for the suspect, but so far, no arrests have been made.
