Want a pet? Check out the Super Adoption event this weekend

FRESNO, Calif.

The dogs and puppies at the Valley Animal Center jump at the sight of attention, and adoption advocates are hoping they'll soon pull on your heart strings at the Super Adoption event.

"Instead of having to drive from shelter to shelter to look for your new pet, come to our agency and we'll have about 15 rescues and shelters here on site so you can see what everybody in the Valley has to offer," said Rosie Davenport with the Valley Animal Center.

The Valley Animal Center is hosting the Super Adoption event. Animal advocates say there's a real need to match local homeless pets with a family.

"Fresno actually has one of the highest kill rates in the country, which means we put down more animals each year for lack of space in our shelters than most other cities and counties in the nation, which is a really horrible statistic for us to have," said Davenport.

That has pushed advocates to help animals find homes. The Super Adoption event will be a one-stop shop for adoption -- allowing potential pet parents to view animals and even spend time with them in a dog park. Advocates say shelter animals make great companion pets.

"It really seems like they have this certain trait for the rest of their lives where they're so devoted to you, they're so happy to be with you. Maybe because they've seen the other side, they don't want be in a shelter anymore. I think it's certainly true that shelter animals are very grateful," said Davenport.

You can meet Waffles, Henry and hundreds of other dogs and cats in need of a good home at the Super Adoption event on Saturday, May 10. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Valley Animal Center -- 3934 N. Hayston -- located just off Highway 168 and Dakota.

ABC30 is a proud sponsor of the Super Adoption event.
