New Trial for 1986 Murder Case

2/29/2008 Fresno Robert Thompson appeared in a Merced County Court this morning. The judge declared a mistrial earlier this month after the jury failed to reach a verdict.

Today the District Attorney's Office told the court it will re-try Thompson for the murders of 12-year-old Jodi Ragsdale and 15-year-old Sheila Carter.

Carter's mother says she's ready to face a new trial in hopes of getting justice for her daughter saying, "I'm just taking it one day at a time."

Defense attorneys say Thompson is ready to prove his innocence. "He's a patient man. He feels he had a fair trial the first time and is looking forward to the next one," said Defense Attorney Randy Thomas.

Jury selection for the new trial is scheduled to start in June.
