New Beginnings

5/24/2008 Reedley, CA The students were from Wellspring Academy in Reedley, a boarding school for obese teens. After months at the school, many of the teens are now half of their previous sizes.

Students from Wellspring Academy arrived at their prom in a stretch limo and school buses, dressed in much smaller formal wear than they'd ever worn before. The students are from all across the country, but spent much of the last year at Wellspring Academy in Reedley. There, they transformed their bodies and learned how to live a healthy lifestyle.

"Everyday can't be about a low-fat diet and 10,000 steps a day, and changing your behaviors. You got to have some fun too. So tonight's wellsprings' prom is about having some fun," said John Gordon with Wellspring Academy.

It was a first prom for many of the students, like junior Ganzy McCorvy. She lost nearly a hundred pounds in the last 11 months. "When I went shopping, it was weird because I usually have to go shopping at Torrid or a plus-sized store. But I just went into a normal store and bought a small dress. So it was pretty exciting," said McCorvy.

Senior Zach Aaronson had been to a prom before, but said Friday's was much different than his last. He's lost 172 pounds since last year. "I actually spent $750 dollars on a 60 /52 suit, which is now absolutely… it could be a tent for a small family now," said Aaronson.

Aaronson felt so good, he said he didn't want to take the tux off. "I think I'm going to do the morning run tomorrow morning with this one, because I'm never going to take it off. I'm just going to exercise in it until it falls to pieces. Because I feel fantastic in it!" said Aaronson.
