Californian Faces Third Hot Night

Fresno, CA An unwelcomed sauna is how many residents describe sleeping in the Californian. 57-year-old Debbie Schroer bought 2 cold watermelon drinks as crews got ready to fix the air conditioner. Schroer said, "It's very refreshing. It's better than sodas. It cools you down."

Emergency crews prepared to shut down Van Ness so a large crane could hoist a new compressor 9 stories up, but the delivery never came. Now Schroer and her neighbors will again sleep in sauna like conditions. Schroer said, "It's been so stuffy you just .. your heart starts pounding and my face gets red, so we go to the cooling area."

Fresno Fire department spokesperson Ken Shockley said the new a-c part was shipped to Virginia. In the mean time, fire fighters will be at the Californian through the night to watch those who have fragile health. Shockley said, "It's important to know since we've been at the Californian, we haven't had a heat related illness. We're very concerned with the population of the California because a lot of those folks are at risk and susceptible to extreme temperatures."

Some residents say it's just bad timing: an a/c break plus extreme heat. Albert who lives at the Californian and didn't want to give his last name said, "They're doing what they can for people that need special assistance or special care. They're taking care of business."

The city plans to shut down Van Ness at Kern on Friday around noon. That's when the new a/c compressor is expected to arrive. But the part will first have to make a transcontinental trip.
