Members of Safe Beach and Dunes and the Center for Biological Diversity have organized a letter-writing campaign against the fifth annual "Endurance Beach Race" this weekend. The center calls it a "highly destructive" event that will harm the habitat, sensitive species and pollute the air.
The race raises money for a research center that focuses on stem cell treatments to repair spinal cord injury, and a nonprofit foundation that helps injured motorcycle racers.
Dennis Law, president of the Central Coast Motorcycle Association, says the organization has protections in place for both riders and the environment.
