One of the businesses almost scammed is "Not Just Paper" in Fig Garden Village. The owner said a man came in wearing an official looking uniform and said he was there to perform a yearly inspection on the fire extinguisher. But then, a few weeks later the business got a bill from Southern California for more than $300 dollars for services the owner said weren't even needed.
She said she called the company up and confronted them about their questionable practices. "We went back and forth a little bit and I finally said, I think this is a scam and I think you know it's a scam. And at that point she said she should would just void my bill," said Karen Genovese.
The Better Business Bureau said only representatives of local fire departments are authorized to conduct inspections of fire extinguishers and other related equipment.
