Ashley Swearengin Begins Work as Fresno's Mayor

Fresno, CA, USA Tuesday, Swearengin took the oath of office in downtown Fresno. The new mayor said the economic crisis is starting to impact the city and she promises to do what she can to help. She laid out some long-term plans and goals for her first 100 days in office.

"I am calling for an immediate improvement to the city's transportation service to better connect workers with the largest employment centers to get people to the jobs available in our community," said Mayor Swearengin.

Swearengin said she wants Fresno to be the city that defies the odds and surprises experts when the city meets its goals. Besides the economy, Mayor Swearengin wants to keep closer tabs on registered sex offenders.

Swearengin and Police Chief Jerry Dyer said "Operation Monitor" will help authorities keep track of sex offenders living in Fresno. The plan would require convicted sex offenders to wear GPS monitoring devices, even after completing parole.

More than 300 registered sex offenders live in Fresno. "Operation Monitor" goes before the city council for consideration next week.
