Burglary Suspect Shot by Sheriff in Friant

A Fresno County Sheriff's Deputy says he was forced to defend himself while chasing a burglar in Friant. The deputy ended up shooting the man.The county's second officer involved shooting this year happened on Granite and Waldby near Friant Road around 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.

The shooting happened right as nearby residents were finishing up dinner. Detectives say it appears a burglar was trying to get away but was spotted and chased back to the home he allegedly robbed.

A call came into the Sheriff's Office at 6:45 p.m. that someone driving a white SUV was robbing a house. The driver was spotted a few miles down the road at Millerton Lake when a chase started.

The deputy followed the driver back to the house he allegedly robbed. Once there detectives say the driver pulled out a weapon. And that's when the deputy opened fire.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to Community Regional Medical Center for emergency surgery.

His condition is unknown. Deputies tell us the alleged robber is known by the local law enforcement.
