First Chinese Baptist Church Celebrates 125 Years in Fresno

Fresno, CA Sunday, the church held a special service to celebrate the past and look to the future.

The church has a history in the Valley since 1882, when the First Baptist Church started to reach out to new Chinese immigrants through a special ministry.

"They felt because of the because of the large number of Chinese that were in Fresno coming here after building the railroad, which was completed in 1876 that was a need for a church to help the Chinese people," said Joseph C. Woo of Fresno.

During Sunday's service, longtime church members were recognized, including Mr. Joseph C. Woo, who has been attending the church more than 80 years.

He said the church started getting much more diverse in the 1990's when the church moved to Northeast Fresno from downtown.
