Cleanup Begins After Storm Slams the South Valley

VISALIA, Calif. All day people have been stopping by the city's corporation yard and filling up sandbags. City crews and tree service companies were running around all day long cleaning up after yesterday's mess and preparing for any future damage.

Workers from Jack Benigno Tree Service braved the rain on Tuesday to remove debris from the storm and cut down large trees that could cause damage from more rain and wind this week.

"We have a big pine tree up against a house we need to get it off before it falls," said Frank Hunter with Jack Benigno's Tree Service.

Crews stacked dozens of pieces of the tree trunk on the bed of this truck, all part of a 60-foot tree that was pushing against the house. The homeowners said the tree was shaking the house during yesterday's high winds and they were afraid it was going to come crashing into their house this week if they didn't get it removed.

Hunter said, "The house is creaking when the wind's blowing uh scaring them a little bit. Yeah, they want it out."

Hunter said this time of year is usually one of the busiest for tree service companies.

At Visalia's Corporation Yard, Rick Flores and his wife filled up eleven sand bags after their house flooded from the rain. "Our fence came down the side of the house it's flooded completely; water is going inside the house. I mean it's just terrible, it's bad," said Flores.

As Visalia's streets flooded, the city's fire department called in two extra engines in case they needed more manpower to respond to storm-related emergencies.

Most people are worried they still haven't seen the worst of this week's detrimental weather.

"It's crazy I haven't seen anything like this for a long time I know we need the rain but I haven't seen anything like this in a long time."

People can make sand bags here and at the three fire stations around Visalia. There are also some pre-made sandbags in the corporation yard building.
