Two shootings in Merced

FRESNO, Calif. The fatal shooting happened around 11 Friday night on "D" street near Childs Avenue. Police say someone on foot shot two teens outside an apartment complex.

A 17 year old was pronounced dead at the scene, and his 16 year old friend had to be flown to a Modesto hospital. Investigators are still trying to determine the motive for the shooting.

"Our detectives, they're contacting witnesses to determine if the shooting was gang related, that area will be explored," Lt. Bimley West said.Police say the suspects took off in a car after the shooting and officers are still searching for them.

Just about an hour before that deadly shooting, a U.C. Merced student was shot during a busy graduation party in downtown Merced.

It happened near the intersection of Main and K Streets during the "Cap and Town Festival," which celebrates local graduates.

Officers responded to the area after someone reported a fight. Moments later, shots were fired, sending people in the crowd running.

The U.C. Merced student, who's now been identified as Michael Robles, was shot in his leg.

But police say the 22 year old is expected to be okay. Officers detained several people for questioning, and they also found a gun in the area.
