Store clerk shot in Central Fresno attempted robbery

FRESNO, Calif.

It happened at approximately 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning at the A-Z Food Mart on Palm and McKinley.

Fresno Police say a gunman entered the store, confronted the clerk, and demanded money. The clerk was unable to give the man any money. The clerk's brother come out from the back of the store and got into a confrontation with the gunman -- that's when he was shot.

People across the street heard the shots and come running to the store. One young man tried to help the wounded clerk. "He was just walking around, like in shock… he couldn't really talk right, he was just walking around. I was like, 'Are you okay?' and he was just looking at me in like a blank look", said witness Zack Dixion.

Police say the clerk was taken to the hospital. He suffered a gunshot to the torso with a small caliper handgun. He is in stable condition.

Dixion said the other store employee was badly shaken up. Police are looking for a suspect. He is described as a young Hispanic male with a mustache. He was driving black 4-door compact car, possibly a Saturn, with a spoiler on it.

Police say they have good surveillance video from inside the store. In addition, there are two police cameras at the intersection of Palm and McKinley. Police are reviewing the video to try to find any additional evidence that will lead them to the suspect.
