"Wicked" kicks off two weeks of shows at the /*Saroyan Theatre*/ in Downtown Fresno Wednesday night.

All this week, dozens of carpenters and stagehands have been working to transform the theater -- including a new stage floor, smoke and lights. They've created the fictional land of Oz where the witches grew up, before Dorothy and Toto arrived.

One of the funniest numbers in the show is when Glinda shows Elphaba how to be popular in school and in life. Believe it or not, before Dorothy dropped in, the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the good witch used to be friends.

Elphaba was born with her emerald green skin, and she feels misunderstood. Glinda takes her on as sort of a charity case, but it's not long before Elphaba grows into her own identity. She chooses her own path deciding to stay true to her beliefs, even if others perceive her or paint her as evil.

Tickets for the show are available by calling the Saroyan Theatre Box Office. Their phone number is (559) 445-8200. They can also be purchased online at www.ticketmaster.com
