California's alfalfa hay production is down this year, but the demand is on the way up.

Ag officials say erratic weather and very hot summer temperatures in the Southern California desert contribute to the drop in production compared to a year ago.

Ag officials say the state's dairy farms are increasing their demand for hay. Demand has also been strong in export markets in asia and the middle east.
