Skating rink opens in Downtown Fresno

FRESNO, Calif.

That rink is located on Fulton Mall.

The holidays came a little early for skating fans in Downtown Fresno.

Fulton Mall welcomed its very own ice rink on a chilly Friday.

Maddy Maloney didn't let a little rain stop her from giving it a test run.

"This was really cool to have here in Fresno. It's really awesome," Maloney said.

Quite a few of the first skaters to glide through knew a thing of two about being graceful on ice.

But others got an A for effort including a little girl and an Action News reporter.

No matter what your skill level, organizers are hoping the slippery surface will boost businesses.

"You can build things that will attract people to downtown. There is no doubt if you build the right things people will come," Kate Borders of Downtown Fresno Partnership said.

Customers definitely came to Luis Godinez's family's concession stand. He thinks sales have doubled since the rink opened.

"What the kids really like are the churros. The cinnamon stick, they love those," Godinez said.

Across the street Yozy Ayoub with Tres Hermanos was waiting to clock out of work but she's also hoping the added traffic will attract more customers into her shop.

"People don't actually know about Fulton. It's just basically like where people come and shop for quinceneras and stuff so this actually helps a lot for the store," Ayoub said.

The ice rink will stay open through the holidays until January 13.
