FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Police are investigating a shooting in Central Fresno that injured two people. A barrage of bullets pierced their car around 8:45 p.m. Sunday near 10th Street and Saginaw Way.
Fresno police say they responded to the area and found 20-25 bullet casings in front of an apartment complex. Officers were then called to Community Regional Medical Center after a man and a woman arrived with gunshot wounds.
The driver, a man in his late 20s, was shot in the abdomen. He underwent surgery and was last listed in serious condition. A woman in her 20s, who was a passenger in the car, was also injured when a bullet grazed her ankle. She will be OK.
Police say there was a child and another adult passenger in the backseat. Neither of them was injured.
Investigators say the four people in the vehicle were leaving a party, but they are getting mixed accounts on what happened next. One story is that someone drove up and opened fire. Another story is that there were people waiting in some bushes who shot at them as they got into the car. Police say the child was coached to tell another different story.
Investigators believe the driver was the intended target and that he is currently on parole. They also say this is a gang-related shooting.
