Fresno Unified will again offer free meals for kids during winter break

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- As winter vacation approaches for students, Fresno Unified announced it will provide free meals for all kids ages one to 18 during the break - whether they attend Fresno Unified or not.

Many Valley families struggle with food insecurity.

Fresno Unified said close to 90% of its families qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Superintendent Bob Nelson explained, "We are actually the most impoverished major urban school district in the state."

District Food Service Director Jose Alvarado said, "For many of our students the free breakfast and lunch they receive when school is open is a major source of basic nutrition."

Burritos, pizza, milk and fresh fruit are among some of the items which will be offered.

Nelson added, "I encourage our families to take advantage of these daily meals and take one less worry off your shoulder as you enter the holiday season."

Over 4,500 free meals were served during last year's winter break.

The meals will be served at eight different locations from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. starting December 14th through January 5th.

District officials say no applications are required to receive a meal and kids do not have to be a student at Fresno Unified.
