MERCED COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- Firefighters battled a fire that destroyed 16 vacant mobile homes in Merced County Monday morning. The fire broke out around 8 a.m. at a commercial property on Beachwood Drive, between Belcher Avenue and Santa Fe Drive.

Fire crews say the call first came in as a debris fire because the thick fog made it hard to see what was really going on. Once the first engine made it out there, the crew quickly called for more resources. They were able to protect some surrounding structures, but those 16 mobile homes were destroyed.

Firefighters also had to be careful because of power lines right over the area that was burning. No one was injured, and the fire is now under control.

It appears the mobile homes were just being stored on the property. There's no word yet on the cause of the fire or the dollar amount of the damage.
