FRESNO, California (KFSN) -- A cross now stands along the street where a Los Banos woman was hit and killed by two different cars-- none of which stopped to help.
"It's really sad and disappointing statement for our society when not one, but two vehicles collide with a pedestrian in the roadway and neither stopped to render aid," said Gary Brizzee, Los Banos Police Chief.
The victim has been identified as 57-year-old Karen Wigglesworth.
Los Banos police said the first collision happened around 10 on Tuesday night. Wigglesworth was coming back from a nearby store, and was crossing Mercey Springs Road near Overland when she was hit by the first car. She was able to signal another driver to stop and help, but before he could she was struck again.
"That is rare for two vehicles to hit someone in the roadway, and for neither vehicle to stop is disappointing," said Brizzee.
Police said she died on scene.
Friends and family are holding on to each other for support and hope-- still in shock and disbelief.
"I couldn't believe-- I was like, 'nooo (sic), that wasn't her,'" said Carlisha Velardez, victim's friend.
Wigglesworth's friends say she had a big smile, but a bigger love for people.
"She had a very big heart-- she would give you the shirt off her back," said Velardez.
People who live near the intersection say it is a sad situation, and want some changes to the intersection.
"They should have some other type of crosswalk-- something for the safety of the public," said Bryan Doyle, nearby resident.
Meanwhile, police said this hit and run investigation is ongoing, and hopes to bring justice and closure to the family.
"The victim and their family deserve that, and we're going to make sure that happens," said Brizzee.
Wigglesworth's sons have set up a GoFundMe in light of this tragedy.
Police do not have too much information on the first car involved, but said the second car is a dark colored sedan.
They are also asking people to keep an eye out for cars with front end damage, and for anyone with any information to call the Los Banos Police Department.
