Members of Fresno Sikh Temple organize grassroots effort to help victims of Harvey

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Fresno community has responded in a big way to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey. A grassroots effort was started by members of the Sikh Temple off Highway 99 and Parkway in Northwest Fresno.

A few friends decided to start a collection of items and before they knew it they had much more than they initially set out for.

Organizers have been using the hashtag #fresnocares and said this is not just a drive for Sikhs but for people of all different creeds.

Iqbal Bains of Fresno said, "We started off trying to fill up a Ram 1500 and a 6 by 12 trailer. And right now, we're gonna take potentially two semi-trucks full and this is within a day. We announced this on social media last night and within a day this is the response we've got. My phone has come to a point that it won't even charge. I knew Fresno could do big things but this is tremendous."

If you would like to help they are specifically looking for donations of female hygiene products, diapers, and clothing for young children.

You can drop off the items anytime between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. at the Sikh Temple on Highway 99 near Parkway.

Organizers are planning to send off the trucks to Houston either Friday or Monday depending on how fast they fill up.
