Fires Burn in the Foothills

6/23/2008 Fresno, CA A wildfire is close to forcing evacuations in Mariposa County, flames are threatening 20 to 25 structures. The so-called "Oliver Fire" is burning in Ponderosa Basin, that's between Mariposa and Oakhurst.

Sheriff's officials are warning people to be prepared to evacuate, but they haven't ordered people to leave yet. At last check, that fire was at least 200-acres, and it's 0% percent contained, meaning firefighters do not have any part of the fire surrounded.

Crews are also fighting fires in several other foothill locations including north of Oakhurst near Fish Camp, in Catheys Valley and near Raymond. Firefighters in the foothills are getting help from out-of-state crews to help get things under control.

We did report this morning that evacuations had been ordered for the Ponderosa Basin. This was incorrect… The Mariposa County Sheriff's Department is ordering residents to be prepared for evacuation.
