Rare 1940 Buick pickup is down, but not out

FLINT As Karen Gatlin reports, there's plenty of work to be done.

On March 13, not only did the business founded by Marv Stephenson burn, his rare Buick truck was also damaged. Thankfully, workers at Stephenson and Son Roofing got it out of the burning building before it was destroyed.

"It's one of a kind the way I understand. There were four of them, and this is the only one left," said the owner of Conley's Collision, John Conley.

Since the fire, the truck has been sitting at Conley's Collision. Now it's time to see what shape it's really in.

A basic power washing comes first to be followed by a good soak with a solution that should remove the tar that dripped onto the truck. "The first thing is to get the residue off to see what we have and if we have to change moldings and trim.

The interior will all come out to be reupholstered.

The truck was fashioned from a 1940 Buick Roadmaster for use within the Buick complex. Conley hopes a good cleaning will be all that's needed under the hood - the same initial reaction Marv Stephenson had.

"There's a pretty good chance the engine and components are okay," Stephenson said.

Marv's hope is to get it done for Back to the Bricks.

"I hope in a month it'll look a lot different," Conley said.

Conley hopes to work quickly. Back to the Bricks is just over four months away.
