At a meeting Tuesday in Merced -- the California High Speed Rail Authority -- approved plans for the first two constructible sections. They include a Downtown Fresno station at Mariposa Street and the Hanford West bypass, a section of track between Fresno and Bakersfield.

Supporters say high speed rail will generate jobs, billions of dollars in revenue, and reduce emissions in the Central Valley.

Opponents say it will drastically affect farmers, disturb sacred tribal lands, and is too expensive.
