The Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire says the first openly gay Episcopal bishop and his partner have been united in a private civil union. The diocese has posted a notice on its Web site saying Bishop V. Gene Robinson was legally joined to Mark Andrew in a civil ceremony Saturday. They have been partners for 20 years.

Civil unions became legal in New Hampshire this year.

The diocese says a religious service of thanksgiving followed the civil ceremony which was attended by close friends and family.
