Fresno Border Patrol Job Fair Draws Hundreds

Fresno, CA, USA People were filing in all morning long ... By noon more than 100 men and women had shown up at this /*Border Patrol*/ Recruitment Fair in northwest Fresno.

Robert Cortez, Border Patrol Agent: "Last week we were in Louisiana this week we're in Fresno. We target areas where we haven't been before areas where unemployment is high."

According the U.S. Department of Labor, more than 43,000 people were unemployed in Fresno in the month of June Marissa Gonzales is one of them.

Marissa Gonzalez, Fresno Resident: "I've been looking for a job for a couple of months now ... haven't been able to find anything here in the valley so I'm exploring my options to move and work in a different field."

The Border Patrol will hire 6000 new agents this year. For most, job stability is the biggest draw.

Albert Delgadillo, Fresno Resident: "You're employed today you don't have to worry about being unemployed tomorrow."

But the agency is using commercials like this one, that also appeal to people's sense of duty and patriotism.

Those who are hired will be moving thousands of miles out of the area to work in the Border Patrol's southwest region. Most will be stationed in Texas or Arizona.

Albert Delgadillo: "Got 4 kids, got to be able to keep a roof over their head and food on the table so."

Mechanic Albert Delgadillo says he and his wife are ready to move, if it means a better paying job.

Albert Delgadillo: "We talked about it she said ... yeah, you can go up there find us somewhere to go and we'll go."

Starting pay is about $36,600 plus benefits.
