Firefighters battling Curry fire and high heats but still get upper hand on fire

COALINGA, Calif. (KFSN) -- Firefighters are working in triple-digit heat to contain the Curry wildfire in Coalinga. It grew about 100 acres overnight.

Highway 198 is now open as of 8:oo p.m. Saturday.

The Curry fire burned more than 2,900 acres and is 25-precent contained.

Cell phone video a viewer sent to Action News yesterday showed flames were getting bigger. But a fast and aggressive attack have helped fire crews gain the upper hand.

Cal Fire said there are no visible signs of an active fire and crews right now are just managing hot spots. All while taking steps to stay safe and healthy in the heat.

"It's 103 degrees and dry, and firefighters just need to take those rest breaks they need during they're 24-hour shift and stay hydrated," said Captain John Dominguez, Cal Fire.

No structures were damaged and no one had to take relief at an evacuation center.

Cal Fire said the forward spread of the fire has stopped, but we're told there is still potential for the fire to escape the 25-percent control.

About 360 firefighters are on hand working hard to manage and hopefully increase the containment.
