SANGER, Calif. (KFSN) -- Sanger Police are investigating the first homicide of 2016 after a 23-year-old man died from gunshot wounds.

The incident happened at the Sanger Crossing Apartments near North Avenue and J Street after police say a New Year's Eve party ended with a deadly shooting.

Officers came out to the Sanger Crossing Apartment Complex just after 4 a.m. for an outburst of violence. They say there was not a lot of cooperation and nobody seemed to be badly hurt, so they left. An hour later, a man was shot to death.

"The person who was reportedly battered during the 4:19 a.m. call is not the same person who was shot," said Chief Silver Rodriguez, Sanger Police.

Police said they didn't get much cooperation on the first call and everybody was scattering as they got here the second time -- but they were getting some good information this time around. They said several witnesses were interviewed at the police station.

Police say this fairly new apartment complex has already become an area of concern.

A large group of people gathered Friday night in Sanger to hold a candle light vigil for the man shot and killed just six hours into the new year.
