FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Planada man wanted in a shooting that left one of his brother-in-laws dead and another injured is now in custody. Merced County sheriff's detectives arrested Hector Oseguera-Barajas, 37, at the San Diego-Tijuana border on Friday morning.
During the course of the investigation, a homicide detective tracked Oseguera-Barajas to Mexico, where he was able to contact the suspect and convince him to surrender. Detectives worked with U.S. Customs and Border Protection authorities to make the arrest.
Jose Diaz Garcia and Roberto Diaz Garcia were shot on Dec. 26 at a home on Fancher Street near Stanford Avenue in Planada. Both men were flown to the hospital, where Jose Garcia was later pronounced dead.
Sheriff's detectives say their investigation revealed that a Christmas night BBQ turned violent after an argument broke out between family members. They believe alcohol played a major role in the incident, and drugs and gangs were not factors in the dispute.
Oseguera-Barajas will be brought back to Merced and booked into the Merced County Jail on a murder warrant.
