Following Trump's decision to repeal DACA, FUSD expedites Dream Center process

Fresno, Calif. (KFSN) -- President Trump's recent decision to end DACA has left much uncertainty for many school campuses across the U.S. -- including here locally. In a show of support for its students -- Fresno Unified unveiled its new dream resource center for undocumented immigrants on Wednesday.

"We have several hundred kids affected by Dreamer status and DACA--this just sends the message to the city and community at large that we're going to protect the kids, and do everything we can to sustain them," said Bob Nelson, FUSD Superintendent.

The center, located at Manchester Center is believed to be the first of its kind in the country, and will be supported through federal funding-- families can feel comfortable asking for free legal advice and can take citizenship courses.

"That's part of what the goal is for the dream center is-- to provide a legal path toward citizenship--it's to support DACA students make sure they get registered and to give community members information," said Nelson.

Dozens of Edison High Students attended Wednesday's unveiling. Many of them had planned a walkout following last week's DACA announcement -- but thought otherwise after meeting with district officials recently.

"With the help and compromise of the board we are here instead and the right way," said Nancy, Edison High School senior.

Students like Edison High Senior Erika Banuelos say the new resource center is a long time coming.

"This Dream Center is so amazing for Fresno Unified--not only to let our students know but people around Fresno come to the center and get immigration help. This is a place where they're accepted," said Banuelos.
