Unusual Twist in Merced Meth Case

August 13, 2008 12:00:00 AM PDT
The case against a U.C. Merced graduate student accused of stealing supplies from the university to make methamphetamine took an unusual twist.36-year-old Jason West was supposed to enter a plea on charges related to manufacturing meth. But instead, prosecutors had the chemistry student released and immediately re-arrested in the jail on additional charges.

Detectives said the supplies West allegedly stole have been found at three meth labs they've seized in just the past five days. The on-going investigation has led the district attorney's office to consider filing more charges.

Prosecutors plan to file a complaint that includes all of the charges against West in the next two days.
