Clovis ID Theft Suspects in Custody

January 19, 2009 12:00:00 AM PST
A traffic stop by Clovis Police has landed three suspects in custody on I.D. theft and counterfeiting charges. An officer stopped a car being driven by 54-year old Steven Varner for speeding Sunday night at Sierra and Sunnyside Avenue.

Turns out, Varner was driving with a suspended license. The officer questioned the two passengers in the car, 35-year old Michael Gillette and 33-year old Lisa Swetnam who, he said, both gave him fake names.

They were identified by fingerprinting at the scene as wanted parolees. Investigators said the suspects had more than a thousand dollars in merchandise with them that had been purchased using stolen identification and counterfeit checks.
