UPDATE: Madera County Brush Fire

July 28, 2009 2:29:07 PM PDT
Firefighters are gaining ground on a wildfire burning in the foothill community of O' Neals. They now have it completely surrounded and it's 50 percent contained. Update: 7/28/09 11:00am

The fire started Monday on Ash Spring Road, north of Millerton Lake. About 200 acres have burned. That's down from the 700 acres that firefighters thought had originally burned.

Investigators said dry brush helped spread the fire.

Shawn Hickman said he accidentally started the fire while he was trying to get his car running. Investigators agree the fire was an accident.

High temperatures, low humidity and challenging terrain made the fast moving fire difficult to put out.
