Massive Blast at Houston area-plant

The blast happened at about 8:45am at the American Acryl plant along Port Road. A thick black plume of smoke could be seen for miles.

Residents called police reporting they felt their homes shake following the blast. So far, there are no reports of any injuries at this time.

American Acryl has two chemicals on-site: acrylic acid and butyl acrylate. At this point, we don't know what has been burning.

Emergency crews appear to have brought the situation under control. They've been spraying the area of the plant, and flames and smoke are no longer visible. A portion of the plant has been blackened.

As for traffic, Highway 146 northbound at Red Bluff is closed. Traffic is being detoured to northbound Red Bluff. Highway 146 southbound is closed at Shore Acres. Traffic is being detoured at Choate Road to Bay Area.
