Attorney: Neglected horses a misunderstanding

FRESNO, Calif.

Madera County Animal Services seized 12 horses from the woman's O'Neals home after they noticed many of the animals showing signs of malnourishment.

Saturday, the woman's attorney dropped off a truck load of hay and feed at the Madera County Animal Shelter, where the horses are being cared for. He says it's the same food that was being used to feed the animals, and that the whole situation has been blown out of proportion.

"People drop animals off all the time nowadays and this is just one place where the animals seem to be getting good feed and attention and I think this is a good Samaritan being misunderstood here," said attorney Eric Schweitzer.

The woman does not want to be identified. Animal control officials say an investigation is underway.

If you'd like to make a donation to help, you can send a check to the Friends Of The Madera Animal Shelter. That address is 14269 Road 28 in Madera. You can also donate bales of hay and grain.
