Bay Area cop shot, killed during suspect pursuit

VALLEJO, Calif.

The officer was pursuing two suspects after a report of a robbery at a Bank of America branch at Springstowne Center on Springs Road. The suspects' vehicle, a silver SUV, crashed on Janice Street and at least one suspect opened fire at the police officer.

The officer was struck multiple times in the back and died from his wounds.

One of the suspects may be in custody but Thursday afternoon there was a multi-agency search underway for the other suspect, who is believed to have fled on foot. Officers from the Vallejo Police Department, Solano County Sheriff's Department, California Highway Patrol and others searched an area north of the Solano County fairgrounds. The search was scaled back Thursday evening.

A gun was recovered on the 100 block of Janice Street.

Several cars in the vicinity of the crash and shooting were damaged.

The suspects are desribed as black males wearing Halloween masks during the robbery, according to the Vallejo Times Herald.

The Vallejo Police Department is expected to hold a press briefing on the shooting Thursday evening.

The last time a Vallejo police officer was killed in the line of duty was in 2000 when Officer Jeffrey Azuar was killed while serving a warrant.
